The Turning Point:
From Catalysis to Fundamental Thermodynamics

Reflections on the limitations of macroscopic screening and my deliberate pivot towards fundamental electrochemical frameworks.

My early doctoral journey at UNIST was profoundly fulfilling. Immersed in the field of electrocatalysis, I explored organic and inorganic hybrid systems, published multiple peer-reviewed papers, and presented my findings at prominent scientific conferences. My energy was focused on macroscopic kinetic outcomes—optimizing reaction pathways and manipulating binding energies to circumvent Linear Scaling Relationships (LSRs).

However, as my research progressed, so did my relentless curiosity regarding the decoupling of fundamental factors—strictly identifying which specific element affects which phenomenon across the complex interfaces between solid conductors and electrolytes.

The 2024 Gordon Research Conference

The true catalyst for my academic transition occurred during the 2024 Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Electrochemistry. Interacting with frontier research and the rigorous foundations of the science itself, I was exposed to the stark limitations of conventional models. I realized that merely evaluating half-cell reactions or reporting catalytic trends was insufficient; the real challenge in modern energy conversion devices lies in identifying exactly what we observe and how those measured quantities can be mapped as separable variables within a rigorous theoretical framework. This was the fundamental shift I internalized upon joining Prof. Stephen Dongmin Kang's lab; his framework provided the exact physicochemical rigor I had been subconsciously seeking—a way to move beyond empirical screening toward strict deciphering.

Coupled with pivotal personal experiences that offered me unique moments of intense introspection, I decided to aggressively shift my academic trajectory. I stopped being satisfied with simply engineering a better catalyst and instead sought the mathematical and thermodynamic truths behind why certain physicochemical behaviors occur or diverge beyond simplified assumptions and dilute limits.

"My focus has shifted from engineering the optimal electrode to strictly deciphering the fundamental physical and thermodynamic principles that define its behavior."

Ongoing Reflections

This section serves as an open space for my ongoing scientific inquiries. I will regularly upload hypotheses, theoretical reflections, and topics of mutual interest that challenge our current understanding of electrochemical systems.

[Update]: My new essay on Chemical Capacitance and the divide between Electrocatalysis and Battery Science is now available. Read it here.
